Thousands of American businesses have submitted requests for the unlawful duties collected by the government as the tariff refund process begins, according to Reuters.
In February, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump under a statute related to national emergency powers, dealing a major blow to the Republican president.
A spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection said on Friday that the agency has set up a system “to handle refunds efficiently for importers and brokers who paid the duties, in line with the court order”.
This follows reports in court filings by customs officials that, as of April 9, more than 56,000 importers had completed the steps needed to receive their refunds, totaling $127 billion—more than three-quarters of the total amount eligible for reimbursement.
