President Donald Trump announced that he will raise U.S. tariffs on Canada by 10%, in response to an anti-tariff announcement from the province of Ontario, which has affected one of the largest bilateral trade relationships in the world.
Trump’s announcement came via his platform “Truth Social” after days of controversy surrounding the announcement, which invoked Ronald Reagan as a proponent of free trade and stirred anger from the current president.
In his post, Trump clarified that his decision was due to the “serious distortion of facts and hostile actions” contained in the announcement, stating that he would increase tariffs on Canada by 10% above the current rate.
For his part, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Friday that the province would suspend its advertising campaign in the United States starting Monday, following a conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney, in hopes of resuming trade negotiations between the two countries.
